Famed by the movie, Jaws, that created much fear in society in these amazing animals, it once again is striking fear into us. Recent consecutive attacks are causing a mini frenzy throughout Australia, and is becoming widespread.
I, for one, love sharks. I have always had a fascination with sharks since I was extremely young spending my summer vacation days on the coast of South Carolina digging for shark’s teeth. I had the teeth that I found made into earrings, a ring, and a necklace. When I was older, I did the same thing at the dolphin Cove in Myrtle Beach and to this day wear my necklace everyday of my ancient shark tooth, and many times two of them (One I made myself with crafting wire and a chain and a tooth I found).
People need to realize that these sharks truly are harmless and are not intentional man-eaters. Sharks hunt based on movement in the water. Many times, people on surfboards or wading at the surface are confused as sealions doing the same. The chances of a shark attack are LESS than being struck by lightning. It isn’t everyday someone is struck by lightning. Why you may ask? Two reasons. The odds are very low, and people have the sense to take precautions and avoid the risk. Shark attacks on the otherhand, are even less riskier, but occur more often because despite the off chance of it happening, people still enter their territory.
It appalls me that people have become shark hunters and are killing off the population enough as it is, and now with the recent killings, they intend to bypass the lenient laws and set traps to kill even more (specifically Great White Sharks). It is feared that tourrism will go down with the fear of being taken alive by a shark. Once again, why is this an issue? Let me try this again…
WE ARE IN THEIR TERRITORY!
Who are we, as despicable humans to kill off creatures that have been here well before us, when they are just living how they have for trillions of years? We are in their waters, they aren’t coming onto land, into our homes, and eating us. There are so many “issues” with sharks that sicken me. Why can’t we all be terrified by jellyfish, instead? They inhabit the same waters in Australia as the sharks, and are responsible for far more deaths than sharks. Why pick on the sharks just because they are the waters’ great predator? Our greatest fear, is ourselves in reality, not animals of any kind. We kill each other far more than all the killings by animals in history. Actually, I could bet a pretty penny that there are more killings of humans by humans than killings of humans by animals in a single year than all of history.
I could go on forever about this issue and how much it angers me, but nothing will ever change. Humans are power hungry and greedy, and will stop at nothing from obtaining and forever having both. Here’s the latest article on the issue:
