I hate not being in school. I love learning and I wish I could live 500years without being old and crippled, pooping my pants, so that I can learn as much as possible! Since finances are out of my hand and having a higher education seems to be worthless these days (getting a loan to go to school to get a job to pay back the loan that’ll take 30 years makes no sense), I am always trying to expand my mind, because it’s what I love to do! I have taken up learning a new instrument, and I have always always always read numerous articles and journals daily on the internet. Every time I am at the fire dept I learn something new, which is great because ‘they’ always say, if you aren’t learning everyday in the fire service, then get out of it. I have also been highly intrigued by sign language. My interest peeked in the last year and I finally took initiative to learn it. Again, I have no funding, so everything I do is self-teaching, which, in my belief, is even more empowering and more of a use of the mind.
I searched Youtube and Google for videos and sites that would help instruct me. My Smart Hands and ASL Pro have been of a great help to me, as well as Life Print. It’s all about repetition, like anything else. Learning the alphabet, just like any language, is the most vital part, especially in sign language; if I don’t know a word, I can at least finger spell it.
My progress over the year has been quite phenomenal. My vocabulary is somewhere over 200 words. I enforce what I’ve learned by using sign language all day long. When I hear a song, I try sign out as much of the lyrics that I can. Throughout my daily life, I try to at least think of what the sign would be for basic objects or places. The greatest help has been with music because it is most enjoyable and songs repeat choruses, allowing for repetitive learning and remembrance.
The best that I do is try to pick one song to focus on for a week and learn a bit of it on guitar and with sign language. Once I get better with both, I hope to be able to do an entire song and record me playing a song, and signing a song, then making a video of them together. I hope to be able to see that outcome sometime in the near future. I’ll keep posting on my progress periodically.
This is a dinky version of what I would like do, except much much better as far as playing, signing, and video works.
