New year! New adventure! New learning experience! I am all about teaching myself new skills. I have been teaching myself sign language, then added learning to play an instrument (guitar), and now ladies and gentlemen, I will be attempting to *GASP* cook! Yikes!
Cooking is a basic life skill and will greatly help me in becoming healthier while maintaining a partially full wallet. Why not learn new cooking skills and use it for myself and to treat others?
What I already can do:
I can make just about anything for breakfast. It’s the most important, and my favorite meal of the day. Breakfast is in the bag. Don’t think there is much more I can learn to cook, so ill be focusing on dinners.
Two and three years ago I was daring enough to attempt Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. I was able to conquer a turkey (was horrifying! Giblets! Gross!!!), rolls, steamed vegetables, potatoes (scalloped for one meal and mashed the others, both plain and garlic), and brownies for dessert. It all turned out delicious and I didn’t have the slightest clue as to what I was doing the entire time.
I can actually cook quite a bit and seem to have a knack for it. I simply just do not do it enough and have many more dishes to explore and attempt.
As for desserts, I enjoy baking. I can handle that. It’s simple. Ill be sure to try more recipes just for the fun of it, but it won’t be a challenge or anything too new.
The biggest challenge I’ve always had, but faired well with, is timing. When I make big meals its hard to learn the timing of everything so it is all done at the same time and nothing is done early to be left to get cold. That’s comes with practice, familiarity, and making a dish/meal numerous times.
My plan is to try at least one new meal once a week. These meals will need to be cheap, easy, quick, and not disgusting to reheat, since all meals will be packed, reheated, and had for dinner at my job.
The goal is to find recipes, try them, tweak them if need be, and create my own directions with added pictures to add to a personal cookbook for myself that I wish to create. I would like to have at least ten breakfast recipes, ten dinner, and ten desserts. Hopefully I can do more than that, but I live a hectic life with two jobs. Plus, I’m the type to eat something over and over again; I don’t need a huge variety of meals.
Hopefully this works out. I really would love for it to. It will be fun, challenging, and a phenomenal life skill to build. Here goes nothing…
